Putting our Breedings 'On Ice'

Winter made a brief appearance with another famous Hereford Zone 'Ice Event.' This New York/Connecticut transplant still can't quite get over the Maryland version of 'Snow!' With plans to take a break from on-farm breeding this spring and enjoy the coming April foals, plans are being finalized to breed three top quality mares to Katje off-site. This will dwindle down the old fellow's 'frozen DNA' so it was an excellent time to purchase a Nitrogen storage tank and bring the rest home. This also allowed us to make some exciting plans for the future, including securing a dose of Lingh semen for use on one of the fillies when they mature. Breeding may literally be put 'on ice' here for 2012 but with temps in the 50's on the forecast for the entire last week of January, February seems more likely to bring crocuses than snow, and I am betting that we will blink and it will be time to deliver those April babies.

Winter???

With temperatures averaging in the mid-fifties it has been hard to accept that winter has arrived. A few nights in the single digits reminded us that it is indeed mid-January, and that the '90 Day Countdown' has begun! Tanzer and Anna are due mid-April so daily checks of udders and vulvas are part of the routine along with some appropriate expansion of their girthlines! To add to the excitment we are finalizing plans for an indoor arena, construction of which will begin in May. The structure will allow not only for all-weather riding but will facilitate the free-jumping training that will required for the developing young adults in preparation for their IBOP and MPT's. We are very excited about this addition to the farm. To add to the joy, three stunning mares have been booked for Katje for foals for the Farm, including an amazing Oldenburg mare with an equally amazing owner, and two highly bonited and bred mares, one Dutch and one Hanoverian. We are extremely grateful for the support of these quality breeding farms and their owners, two of whom are knowledgable and skilled veterinarians. With his semen supply dwindling these will some of the last foals of Katje's in the United States and we are extremely excited.

It is with mixed feelings that we say goodbye to barn manager Amanda Dreyer. The most caring and compassionate of horse-people, our horses, goats, cats and I were fortunate enough to have Amanda here for over eight years beginning as a high school student. We will all miss her dearly, but are thrilled that she has entered Nursing School full time. With her amazing intelligence, diligence, and kindness we know her human charges will benefit from her care as much as her equine benefactors and that she will have a shining future. Good Luck, my dear friend. You will always be a part of this farm.

Kaareltje will Breed Again in 2012

We have been blessed with a spectacular colt thanks to the generousity of Dr. Harrison who leased her lovely Dutch mare Tatiana for breeding. As we await the arrival of Tatiana's second foal for us due summer 2012 we are ecstatic that we have been given the opportunity to lease another wonderful mare for this coming spring. Many, many thanks go to Markim farms for allowing us to breed Katje to their very special Oldenburg mare Revlon. Revlon is elegant with a special nature and brings to the breeding the blood of Rhodiamant and Tarim. She has had two amazing foals to date and with a little luck we will see her third in 2013. We are very excited about this breeding. Thank you Kim!

Happy Holidays to all of our wonderful extended horsey family! This year has been a challenging one for many in countless ways, but we are on the brink of a New Year and a new beginning. Tanzer gave me my best moment for the year when the 'teen greenie' graciously allowed me to ride her today, for my first ride in over 3 years. It may take another twelve months to wipe the smile off my face. Have a safe holiday season and we will see you all in 2012!

Windtanzer and Kastiana go on Maternity Leave

We wrapped up training for these two young 'working mothers' this week with two fabulous rides. Despite only having 16 sessions under saddle Kastiana, always the quiet natured girl, was trotting poles in her last session and enjoying her last ride with 'Uncle Fred.' Tanzer had a equally impressive final ride with trainer Margaret Hawkins who introduced her to bending and connection during three months of dressage basics. Tanzer is really showing great promise in this discipline and we hope will be respresenting the farm in the show ring in 2012. Both mares are entering their third trimester and will now get to lounge in anticipation of their babies, due in April. Thank you to these two gifted riders who gave our talented young mares a great start in sport. Both girls will return to the arena after maternity leave and will begin preparing for more concentrated work next fall.

Genovia Goes Home to her New 'Momma'

Kastiana's sweet and incredibly tall filly Genovia went home today to new owner Laureen. This special girl is with a special person who understands her needs and
will help her to reach her full potential. The gawky 6 month old will eventually fill into all those legs and we believe she will one day be as kind and wonderful to ride as her dam. Congratulations 'Momma!'

Fall to Winter to Summer...

...and after the October snow last week that left many with over 10 inches of snow and without power (we were lucky and had only a couple of inches) this second week of November found us in the 60's and back in T's! Margaret and Tanzer enjoyed the sunshine while making steady progress with Tanzer's dressage training. We also took advantage of the nice weather and fall colors to take some last photos of the girls before they disppear under their winter coats. You can see more pictures under the

Winter Begins?

Late October brought our second pre-winter snow in as many years. The horses seemed as surprised as I was to see white on the ground so soon! It is always entertaining to see the weanlings respond to their first snow, and Nova looked like she was walking on eggshells those first few steps until she realized it wasn't going to swallow her up. Tanzer is shown sporting her trace clip, the first time in five years that we have broken out the clippers. Katje looked amused, if mildly inconvenienced by having to dig down to the grass. The white was a beautiful contrast with the scarlet leaved maples on the drive. My only hope is that this early shot of winter isn't a hint of rough things to come.

Wintanzer Begins her Dressage Work

After four months under the amazing young horse trainer Fred Harrison, Tanzer has been slowly transitioned to the capable hands of FEI rider Margaret Hawkins for the next phase of her education. Margaret, a friend for many years and an incredible rider, is bringing Tanzer along slowly with an emphasis on moving forward and into the bridle. It gives us great joy to see this young homebred making strides in her early dressage training. Tanzer will have the late winter and spring off to have her second foal. After foaling she will go back under saddle with the goal of completing her Mare Performance Test and entering the show ring in dressage in 2013.

Kastiana is Under Saddle!

With our focus on breeding it has been several years since we have had horses working under saddle. Most of the babies have been sold as weanlings, but we retained three special fillies 'for ourselves' including Windtanzer, Sagan, and Kaareltje's first homebred filly, Kastiana. We are pleased to announce that our overgrown arena is getting regular use again. Fred Harrison rode Kastiana for the first time this week and has been back on her twice. What a thrill to have two promising youngsters in work. Even better to see that Anna has her sire's incredibly quiet and willing nature. She acts like she has been doing this all her life. Fred did ask if we had an extension ladder for mounting?! Luckily the gentle giant didn't mind standing next to the fence-line so he could reach the stirrup. Sagan is next - but we have a year and a half to go. For now I am just getting used to the smell of saddle soap once more. I have never been so happy to clean tack!

Tatiana is Back in Foal to Kaareltje

Good news came today from California. Tatiana, the lovely Dutch mare owned by Lio Lomas Dutch Warmbloods, is back in foal to Kaareltje for a summer, 2012 foal. Her son Grimmauld was sold to an amazing young FEI rider just shortly after birth, and we are hoping for a filly from this match made in heaven to add to our breeding program. Thank you, Dr. Deborah Harrison, for once again 'working the magic' with our very limited frozen semen from this rare and dear stallion who has for the last year been enjoying his retirement.

Sagan and Handler 'Hit the Arena'

Sagan reached another milestone today in her young horse development. She entered the arena wearing a saddle for the first time and walked and trotted in hand and over ground poles taking confidence from her friend and handler Calea. The pair have been working lightly together several times a week through the summer, and after a month off to relax are back in action. Sagan, now 1 1/2 years old, is a quick learner who enjoys new mental challenges and we have high hopes for her to be shown in hand as a two year old.

Kastiana Enters the 'Workplace'

Kastiana, standing a full 17.2 hands at four and a half, has been started very slowly with respect to her size. Still maturing and filling out, it was decided between vets, trainer and staff that she is mature enough to go lightly under saddle.

Sagan Turns 1 1/2

Happy half-birthday to Donarsagan who is officially mid-way to the 3-year old mark.
One of our best fillies to date, Sagan has been retained to join our breeding and competition program at maturity. With her inquisitive and intelligent nature and remarkable athleticism we have high hopes for this young lady, currently just a hair less awkward than a few months ago so the perfect timing for a quick 'photo session.'
Won't be long before the serious winter woollies and yearling ganglies set in!

Weaning is Over

Genovia was weaned late August and spent several days in a stall while mom and buddy Tanzer returned to the field 'minus one.' This amazing filly, true to form, was hand-walking and grazing the day after separation and never missed a meal. Now out with 'Uncle Haven' and 'Auntie Stri' she will soon be introduced to yearling Sagan as well. Nova is bathing, clipping, and working in hand with a maturity and calmness way beyond her four months. She is the tallest foal we have ever had on the farm so her good nature and laid back attitude are definitely appreciated!
Anna is lunging in tack and getting ready to joint Tanzer under saddle in the next month. It will be exciting to see Katje's daughter under a rider for the first time.

We weathered the worst hurricane in Maryland history in over 50 years with many a filled bucket and trough and a sense of humor to get us through threee days without power and electric. We were fortunate to have only minor damage to most of the farm and a few small trees down. The only real casualty was the large tree on the property line that came down - you guessed it - RIGHT through the new fence-line!
The material worked flawlessly and after the tree was chain-sawed down sprang right back into action. Fence One - Tree Zero! All friends and family appear to be safe and although clean-up continues it looks as though Irene will soon be a memory.

Improvements are Under Way!

In late August began a series of much anticipated improvements to the farm. We began re-fencing using a cutting edge High Density Polyethelyne (HDPE) product designed to enhance safety for the horses and reduce maintainance. The project will take about eight months to complete but we were very excited to see the first of six pastures enclosed. The projects, which will take place over the winter and spring, include plans for enlarging the windows of the barn to increase ventilation and adding new doors to the foaling stalls. The work includes over-head use of power-tools and LOTS of noise! The horses are handling the ruckus well and so the projects have worked perfectly into the 'baby-proofing' routine that follows weaning. We are looking forward to an end to broken boards and rotten posts and more time with the horses! Many Thanks go to Paul Higgins and family at Maryland Horse Fence for their amazing work.

Greener Pastures

Firemist Farm wants to extend our sincere condolensces to Lisa, owner of our homebred Holsteiner gelding Daedalus. Daedalus is by the Contender son Contester out of Teonas Allaera, a spectacular producer, and was Allaera's second foal. Despite Lisa's incredible efforts to save this talented and sweet three year old he had to be euthenized due to a severe fracture sustained in the pasture. We wish to thank Lisa, whose caring and dedication went above and beyond anything a breeder could ask, for giving Daedalus a quality life to the end. Our thoughts are with all those who lives were touched by this special boy.

From High Risk - to High Scores!

When 16 year old maiden mare Ariana came to Firemist to have her foal no-one would know how close that foal would come to not surviving. Ariana went into labor as planned but had a rough delivery. Filly Reign Supreme was resuscitated but was diagnosed later that day with a serious internal issue that caused her to urinate into her abdomen, and underwent emergengy surgery at Leesburg at just 24 hours old. Despite suffering a subsequent viral infection two weeks later she made a complete recovery and went home as an early yearling to owner Camille. Dam Aria was a saint, always patient and cooperative while spending more than two months in a stall to accomodate her foal's recovery. How thrilled we were to receive these photos of Reign, (now called Raena) under new owner and judge Jessica. The petite Royal Prince daughter has received high scores and accolades both in dressage and at her Oldenburg inspection as a young adult. We couldn't be happier to see this little fighter 'all grown up' and to know that the competitive spirit that helped her to survive her first days is alive and well!

Kaareltje's son with Dutch mare, Tatiana, is pictured at 3 days of age at the dam's home in California, Lio Lomas Dutch Warmbloods. The colt, named Grimmauld by new owner Bonnie, has his daddy's head and neck and momma's 'hiney' - the perfect combination for a future in dressage. Dr. Harrison reports that he is sweet and friendly like his sire and dam. We are thrilled that he will be weaning to a lovely FEI dressage rider who will give him a chance at a successful career as an adult and we look forward to following his future career!

Katje has a new SON! Friday June 24th Tatiana delivered a chestnut colt with four socks and a narrow blaze. Mommy and baby are doing well, and maiden mare Tatiana has been a model mother. Kastiana Sahal goes Back to Work

Kastiana has always amazed us with her quiet, tractable nature, which it appears she has passed on to her first filly. A HUGE mare, she was literally lunged only four times as a late 3 year old so she could 'get the idea' without stressing her growing body. Now well into her 4 year old year she has gone back to work - baby at her side. Her first trip to the arena she was lunged lightly in a bridle, while 8 week baby Nova watched nearby with her handler. By the second trip to the ring the mare was contentedly working while Nova worked in hand at the opposite end of the ring! I believe we have two very special girls in this mother and daughter pair, and can't wait to see how Anna looks when she goes under saddle for the first time this fall.

Kastiana Sahal in foal to Licosto

We were thrilled to have Kastiana Sahal check in foal today to the lovely Westphalian stallion Licosto (pictured above) via frozen semen. This is Anna's first pregnancy with frozen and what a lovely match. Licosto, grandson of the famous German Verband stallion Likoto and out of a mare by Rosenkavalier is both talented and elegant and the perfect compliment for the tall, large-boned Anna. His sire's dam-sire is the legendary Donnarhall lending tremendous ridability and temperament. Still a young stallion, Licosto has already qualified twice for the Bundeschampionat and was chosen for the World Breeding Championships in addition to impressing judges with his jumping ability. Grateful thanks to Dr. Michael Harrison who stayed up to inseminate in the middle of the night!

Tanzer and Fred Back Together Again

Genovia - New Photos

Genovia is five weeks old today. This TALL filly is playful and SO sweet. Best suited for dressage she is already doing canter pirouettes in the pasture and is non-plussed by fly sprays, baths, and clippers. She is going to be a breeze to work with. We are seeking a fabulous home for Nova who is out of the 17.2 hand mare Kastiana Sahal (Kaareltje-World Cup I bloodlines) by the Dutch FEI stallion Parcival (Nimmerdor-Voltaire-Lucky Boy). Nova has begun shedding out her foal coat and appears to be a very dark liver chestnut which should be pretty flashy with all that CHROME. Glad she doesn't mind water as I see a lot of baths in her future!

We are excitedly anticipating the arrival of Kaareltje's next foal, due around June 25th in California. Katje was bred to the lovely Gelderlander pedigreed Dutch mare Tatiana owned by Dr. Deborah Harrison of Lio Lomas Dressage Horses. This will be our third Kaareltje offspring and the first conceived via frozen semen. Katje's first grand-daughter Genovia is also anxiously awaiting a future playmate. Windtanzer FM is Confirmed in Foal and 'Back in Tack!'

Tanzer, our lovely E.C. Hanoverian mare is now a five year old and a 'working mother.' She was confirmed in foal today to the stunning and athletic Hanoverian approved Holsteiner pedigreed stallion Coeur d'Amour, pictured above. Tanzer also went back under saddle this week for the first time since being very lightly broken 18 months ago. She was calm and focused as though she had never taken a break for maternity leave despite only having 18 rides as an early 3 year old. Grateful thanks to trainer Fred Harrison who does such a lovely job breaking that the horses barely seem to know they are working! We look forward to showing Tanzer lightly this fall and to her coming foal in April of 2012.

Jastriad turns Twenty - Happy Retirement!

Jastriad (Rampal - Molly's Bai Mist) pictured here at the age of 19, turns twenty on May 14th. We are also celebrating her official Retirement from Breeding. A high level stadium jumper in her early teens, Jastriad has had 9 foals from such distinguished stallions as Contango, DeLaurentis and Rolando and is already a grandmother of 6 through her daughter Ahktiari and son Status Symbol. Her offspring have received accolades in every discipline with riders ranging from amateur young riders to professionals, making 'little momma' one of our most successful broodmares to date. Not a 'couch potato' personality, she is still energetic and playful and enjoys her role as 'Auntie Stri' to our youngsters. Stri is retiring breeding sound and healthy which was our goal. We hope she will follow in the footsteps of her dam who lived to the ripe old age of 36!

Ahktiari Shines in the Eventing Arena

Ahktiari, Jastriad's fifth and and smallest offspring, has found her niche' in the eventing arena. Dam of three lovely foals, the 15.3 hand Tari received very little under saddle training before she 'Went West' to have a career with her new owner at the age of seven. She has been in training now for nearly two years and is making great strides with her spectacular owner, Sue, and her young rider. We are SO grateful to everyone who has allowed Tari to shine, proving that good things come in small packages, and that a mare can be a excellent mother AND a 'career woman.' The best part of being a breeder? The smile on the rider's face!

Donarsagan Turns One

Donarsagan, Wrave's 2010 Hanoverian filly with the stallion Donarweiss ggf, became a yearling on March 24th. Sagan is the first filly we have retained for our breeding program since half sibling Kastiana was born four years ago. Still at a 'gawky' age, we have not been disapointed. Sagan is not only a lovely mover with good bone and flashy good looks, but she is smart and savvy and one of the most forward-natured of our homebreds. We have high hopes for her as she enters the breed arena in 2011.

Kastiana Sahal Delivers her First Foal

Maiden mare Kastiana Sahal delivered her first foal, a stunning chestnut sabino filly by Parcival, at 4:00 a.m. April 23rd. This is also our first 'grandchild' from stallion Kaareltje and beloved mare Wrave. The filly, named Genovia (Nova for short) has her dam's incredibly long legs and already stands chest high to me. Good thing she is as sweet and personable as her mommy and grand-daddy. A true 'pocket pony' who whinnies when she sees us and appears to know absolutely no fear. Now 24 hours old she is just learning where to put all those LEGS. We look forward to watching this young lady grow - and to washing all those white stockings! Many thanks to 'Auntie Linda' who took those precious first photos while I was on 'naval dipping duty.'

Havendjur, our 'Miracle Foal' turns 21 !

Haven, known to many as a 'miracle baby' turned 21 years old on March 23rd. Haven's conception and survival after birth has been the subject of many discussions among veterinarians and breeders alike. A third ovulation in an aged mare Haven was supposed to become a transfered embryo but remained in his donor mom, Firemist, beating the odds on almost every level possible. We honor Haven who proved that OCD need not be a career ender as the premature fellow was actually born with the disease due to his dam's advanced uterine degradation. He also was diagnosed with both renal and liver insufficiency and was half normal birth-rate, but managed to thrive against all odds. We still joke about the 17+ hand gelding who was suposed to be "unsound, insane, and never to mature over 14 hands." He is the reason we diligently studied developmental joint disease and I credit him with helping us to assure other foals in our own and many other breeding programs would escape the pitfalls of this common condition. While Haven's situation was unique and may not have been preventable, the education we received while attempting to manage his growth and development can be applied to all foals. Haven also went on to have a successful career in dressage, to be a search and rescue certified equine, and even a therapeutic riding horse in his long and unexpected career before retiring from sport at age 18 to enjoy the remainder of his days raising 'his' foals. Thank you, dear boy, for reminding us all to handle adversity with grace and perseverence and that patience, faith, and a little science can truly combine to work miracles. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Liason B begins his Under Saddle Career

The first son of the wonderful Holsteiner mare Teonas Allaera (Camiros/Lorentin/Caretino) is now under saddle. Liason, sold to Fat Chance Farm as a late weanling, is one of Firemist Farm's most promising FEI jumper prospects. We are thrilled to see him flourish under the expertise of his owner, trainer Kris Morris. Liason is pictured at left trying to keep up with his dam's powerful canter at the tender age of 10 hours old, and as an early three year old, below. Allaera is also dam to the First Premium Dutch Warmblood colt Daedalus.

Jastriad Grand-daughter goes Under Saddle

Jastriad, dam of nine, now can all boast about the first of her grand-children to go under saddle. Allegria (a.k.a. 'Dolly') out of Ahktiari, Jastriad's fifth foal, was broken by her amateur young rider/owner and has already attended her first hunter show as an 'observer.' Wrave 'Out of Retirement'

The stunning and talented Hanoverian mare Wrave (Wallstreet Kid and Georgey Girl by Garibaldi II) came out of 'retirement to broodmare status' to enter the hunter breed show arena. She was immaculately mannered and looked and acted the part of a true competitor despite having been a 'stay at home mom' for the past five years and weaning her latest foal just five days earlier. The 11 year old Wrave will enjoy a break from her mommy duties this fall and will be bred again in 2011.

2011 Kaareltje Foal Expected!

Kaareltje, castrated in 2009 to allow him to better enjoy his retirement, is expecting a foal from the lovely Dutch Warmblood mare Tatiana. This will be his first frozen semen foal, and we are very excited about this pregnancy. Although still early, we are optimistic that Kaareltje's 3 year old daughter Kastiana may have a little brother or sister, and thrilled that the frozen semen has proven to 'do the job' even as he was fairly aged when he was collected. Thanks go out to Dr. Deborah Harrison for her expertise with frozen semen and for allowing us this opportunity with one of her spectacular mares. Also to Select Breeder's Services who worked diligently to get the best results from the freezing process allowing us a chance to reproduce this one of a kind boy. Wintanzer FM Delivers our first Sport Pony Foal

Our Elite Candidate Hanoverian mare Windtanzer FM delivered her first foal in mid-May, a stunning colt by Weser-Ems approved Welsh stallion Wedderlie Mardi Gras. Sembagare is Firemist's Farm's first sport pony foal, and what a great experience! He has his father's stunning head and neck, strong 'hiney' and his mother's floating trot. We have high hopes for this 'little warmblood' to be an FEI dressage pony. Sembagare is registered half-Welsh and is eligible for many warmblood and pony registries. He is being offered for sale so he can fultill his sport potential. Firemist Farm wishes to thank all at Family Partners Welsh ponies for helping us to navigate this new ground.

Homebred 'All That Glitters' takes home the Adult Amateur Hunter Championships

Congratulations to Jastriad's son Logan, shown as 'All That Glitters' and owner Lindsley Fletcher on their success at Jacksonville. The two had multiple wins on the competitive Florida 'A' Circuit in the adult 18 - 35 division. Logan is Jastriad's fourth foal of 9, many of whom are competing in dressage and show jumping, and along with 3/4 sibling Antigone has represented this versatile producer in the hunter arena.

D'Conteyla Returns to Maryland

D'Conteyla by Contango out of our Rampal daughter and jumper producer Jastriad had a brief visit to Firemist Farm and spent some time with her dam and 'Uncle Haven' before leaving for her new home. Teyla will be joining her sister Ahktiari's daughter Allegria and will be preparing for a career in the show jumping arena at maturity. We may have the option to breed her in the future and are ecstatic that we will be able to watch her grow and progress with her new 'mom.' Congratulations Kathy! We couldn't be happier with this homebred 3rd generation filly's new home.

Wrave's Foal Arrives!

Wrave, talented Hanoverian mare by Wallstreet Kid (World Cup I) out of Georgey Girl (Garibaldi II) delivered a stunning black filly by the precocious FEI stallion Donarweiss ggf on April 24th. Donarsagan is a forward natured, athletically built filly with the powerful movement of her dam and elegant features and aptitude of her sire. She is already displaying the movement, confidence and intelligence that make her an FEI dressage prospect.

Ahktiari Starts Showing!

Firemist Farm bred and raised, Ahktiari, just recently attended her first Hunter show in California. She received two 1st place ribbons, one 2nd place ribbon, and one 4th place ribbon! We are so proud of you, Tari! Congratulations to her proud owner, Sue!

Windtanzer FM

Tanzer did it again! This lovely and versatile young mare reprised her victory as a two-year-old by taking Reserve Champion non-Thoroughbred 3-year-old hunter at the Maryland State Fair.

Tanzer has also begun her under-saddle career. She was calmly walking and trotting with trainer, Fred Harrison, during her first ride.
